My Solo Trip to Athens
Alone in Athens: Where Fear Meets Freedom
Traveling alone had always been on my mind, but I could never quite work up the courage. Then one day I finally booked the ticket, packed my bag, and found myself walking the streets of Athens. Let me tell you: it was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Why Solo? Why Athens?
I had always wondered what it would feel like to explore a city at my own pace — without asking anyone, without compromising. Athens felt perfect: close enough, full of history, and a place that pulls you in with its food. "The perfect first solo trip," I thought, and just went for it.
The first day, I was a little anxious — new city, new language, new everything. But by the second morning, that anxiety turned into something completely different: freedom.
Museums and Touching History
One of the most magical things about Athens is that history seems to spill out from every corner. Walking around the foothills of the Acropolis, you feel like you've been teleported thousands of years back in time. Getting lost in museums for hours, standing in front of one display case for ages — because no one is telling you "let's go already" — is a true luxury.
My favorite moment? Watching an old man reading a book in a quiet corner. In that instant, I told myself: "I'm here. I'm really here."
Food, Drinks, and Little Discoveries
One of the best parts of solo travel: you can sit wherever you want, for as long as you want.
- Mornings with fresh orange juice and bougatsa at a tiny café
- Afternoons in tucked-away tavernas with souvlaki
- Early evenings with a glass of wine and a view
Every meal became a small ritual. I wasn't in a rush, I didn't have to ask anyone "what should we eat?" Just me and my taste buds.
The Café I Can't Forget
Halfway through my trip I randomly stumbled upon a café — the atmosphere, the music, the lighting, everything was just right. But what really got me was its cocktail menu. Each drink had its own little story, the names were creative, and the flavors were unlike anything I'd had before.
I was so impressed that I took photos of the menu. My plan: when I get back to Istanbul, recreate those flavors at home — maybe even serve some to my friends. Below are the menu photos — maybe there's something there you'd like to try too. 🍸
What Solo Travel Taught Me
- Enjoying your own company is a feeling like no other
- Planning is nice, but unplanned moments are often the most beautiful
- Being alone ≠ being lonely. I never once felt lonely
- I'm so much braver for the next solo trip
In the End
Going to Athens alone wasn't just about discovering a city — it was about discovering myself. If there's a place on your mind but you keep thinking "I could never go alone," I'm writing this for you: you can. And it'll be wonderful.
I don't know where my next solo stop will be, but I know one thing: I'm not afraid of hitting the road anymore. ✨
